Rosenwald-Felts, to thee we pledge our honor
To do our best whatever be the test.
To love you true will be our joy and pride.
Your guiding light is ever by our side.
Each day our goal to scan the heights is near,
Your candle glows to keep our hearts from fear.
Rosenwald-Felts, we’ll cherish you with ne’er a foe,
Oh Rosenwald, Oh Rosenwald, we love you so.
Julius Rosenwald was a Jewish-American businessman and philanthropist who gave millions of dollars for education although never finishing high school! He transformed the catalog company Sears, Roebuck & Co. into a retail giant as its president and was instrumental in founding Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. However, one of his best known acts of generosity was using his fortune to fund the construction of over 5,300 schools for African American children in the segregated South. One of them was the Rosenwald-Felts School in Galax,VA.
